Thursday, July 31:

OK, time to turn the page and start talking about games again.  All games for tonight are ON.  Once final playoff seedings have been determined after tonight, the playoff schedule will be posted on the web site.

The short version is:  The 7-10 and 8-9 elimination games will be played Tuesday, August 5 at both Stonebridge diamonds.  The first round of the best-of-three series will be played Wednesay, August 6, Thursday, August 7 and Monday, August 11 (if necessary).  The games on August 6 and 7 will be played at both Stonebridge and both Meadowgreen diamonds.  Each series will have one of their first two games at Meadowgreen and one at Stonebridge.  We will not be using Dief during Exhibition Week........we've been down that road before..........

I spoke with Scott Mills last night, and he assured me that the "zero tolerance" policy regarding umpire abuse does NOT mean that players or coaches have lost the right to question or discuss calls......but it must be done in a respectful manner........I think that even in the heat of battle, grown men should be able to adhere to that standard........

WEDNESDAY, JULY 30 SPECIAL NOTICE:

Late last night, I received an e-mail from one of our league umpires, and from Umpires Association President Scott Mills.  Apparently at one of the games last night a player at Stonebridge was repeatedly abusive towards the umpires.  We have received warnings about this in the past, but some individuals have not heeded the message.  As a result of last night's game, and four other complaints from umpires in the past month Scott has pulled all umpires from our league games for tonight.  He has assured me that this will not affect the relationship between the umps and our teams as we move forward, and he will not pull services during the playoffs, but he felt a message needed to be sent........here is the substance of the letter (with very slight editing so as not to embarrass individuals)........

"There is an escalating problem in the SMBL with regards to abusing umpires.  This is now the fifth incident that has been brought to my attention in the past 3-4 weeks and now as of tonight I am fairly certain I have lost another umpire due to rampant verbal abuse.  The umpires could just eject individuals, but when a team only has nine players, many less experienced umpires do not want to put up with the aftermath that would occur if the game is forfeited on an ejection.  My umpires don't want to be the enemies here and many of them do not have the experience to deal with this ongoing problem.  The umpires do not want to be the ones to take the brunt of the abuse when they have to eject players and forfeit games because these MEN cannot control their behaviour and just play the game.  Therefore after having discussions with some senior umpires we have reached a decision.  A message needs to be sent to the teams in the SMBL that the umpires are not there to take their abuse, or the abuse of the fans and it is not going to fall on the shoulders of any one umpire in particular.  I have lost two umpires this year due to behaviour of teams in the SMBL.  Thus Wednesday night, the Umpires Association is pulling all umpires from SMBL games.  Umpires will return to league play on Thursday.  I am also asking umpires once again to have a zero tolerance policy for behaviour, especially for playoffs.  If players do not want to be suspended during playoffs, they had better think twice before opening their mouths.  It disappoints me that we have to take a stand like this.  We have always held your league in the highest regard fot the behaviour of its players and the calibre of baseball in the league for developing umpires.  Please make teams aware of why they have no umpires Wednesday and I am hoping the players get the message that umpires are people too, and often make a lot less mistakes than the players do during a game."

WEDNESDAY, JULY 30 SPECIAL NOTICE:

Unfortunately, all games scheduled for tonight have been cancelled.  Due to re-occurring umpire abuse by a few individuals, the Umpires Association has pulled their services for tonight.  I will be posting a letter from Scott Mills shortly.  Games for Thursday and subsequent dates will be ON as scheduled........

July 29 Playoff Update:

July 25:

All games for tonight have been cancelled due to the rain.

July 24:

Due to a 6:00 p.m. thunderstorm, tonight's games have been cancelled.  The Marlins-Pirates game has been rescheduled to Wednesday, July 30 at Meadowgreen West.  The Armadillos-Blue Jays game will be put on hold and will be rescheduled to Tuesday, August 5 at Stonebridge South IF the game still has playoff implications for the Armadillos.  Otherwise, it will go into the books as a 0-0 tie............

July 23:

At Stonebridge North, the Rangers beat the Brewers 6-5.  Steve Pura pitched a complete game for the victory.  Geoff Gerber drove in the winning run with 2 out in the bottom of the 7th.

At Dief, it was the Ryan Usher show as the Rhinos edged the Armadillos 6-5.  He came on to pitch with the Rhinos training 5-1, then shut the door over the final four innings.  As if that wasn't enough, he went 4 for 4 and hit a bases loaded double in the bottom of the sixth to drive in the winning runs...........personally, I never liked the guy........

At Stonebridge South, the Wombats downed the Angels 8-1.  Tyler Knudsen pitched six scoreless innings to earn the win.

TO ALL TEAMS IN PLAYOFF CONTENTION:

For planning purposes, here are some notes to keep in mind as we head towards playoffs.  The regular season is scheduled to end next Thursday, July 31.  Any games between now and then that get rained out AND DO NOT have direct playoff implications will be recorded as a 0-0 tie.  However, as in past years, no team will be eliminated from the playoffs because they get a game rained out.  Currently, it looks like there are three teams (Angels, Pirates, Armadillos) battling for the final two spots, so we will have to see how that scenario plays out.

If we get no significant rainouts, and all playoff spots have been decided by July 31, then the 7-10 and 8-9 elimination games will be played Tuesday, August 5 at Stonebridge.  If any remaining games with direct playoff implications get rained out, they will be played Tuesday, August 5 and the elimination games will get pushed back a day (or two, or three if we get a rainy week)......

Unless things get backed up due to rain, the best of three rounds will be played as follows:

Round 1:  Wednesday, August 6, Thursday, August 7 and Monday, August 11

Round 2:  Wednesday, August 13, Thursday, August 14 and Monday, August 18

Finals:  Wednesday, August 20, Thursday, August 21 and Monday, August 25

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ABOVE SCHEDULE IS TENTATIVE AND MAY NEED TO BE ADJUSTED DUE TO RAINOUTS, OR SWEEPS IN THE EARLY PLAYOFF ROUNDS.

We will continue to keep you updated.

July 17 - Note to All Teams:

Please note that all diamonds and leagues in the City are experiencing a temporary shortage of Field Marking flour/chalk.  We have borrowed from Cairns Field and the Peewee diamonds in the past couple of weeks, but everyone's supply is dwindling.  We are expecting a shipment shortly, but if you find that your diamond has no base lines in the next few days, you will understand why..........

July 16 - Note to All Teams:

During the past two weeks, we have received two complaints from umpires regarding post-game verbal abuse and threats that have taken place on the field or in the parking lot.  It should go without saying that this type of behaviour from teams in a Men's League is not acceptable.  One umpire has resigned because of an incident that occurred last week.  Our league has always enjoyed an excellent relationship with the Umpires Association, and we do not want to jeopardize this by childish behaviour, or run the risk of having umpires pulled from our games.  I trust that this word to the wise will be sufficient going forward.  If you need to discuss a play or a ruling during the game with the umps, do so respectfully, and when the game is over, shake hands and move on............Thank you.
