Aug 27, 2013

Monday, August 26

At Cairns Field, in a thrilling, classic final game, the Armadillos outlasted the Rangers 3-2 in 13 innings to claim their third league championship in a row.  The game was tied 1-1 after seven, as Steve Pura and Chad Mukanik hooked up in an unbelievable pitcher's duel which featured countless outstanding defensive plays by both teams.  The Rangers scored in the top of the ninth to take a 2-1 lead, but Jordan Bird knocked in Karsten Strelioff with the tying run in the bottom of the ninth with two outs to keep the game going.  The Armadillos loaded the bases in the 11th inning, but couldn't push across a run.  In the bottom of the 13th, Drew Atkins singled, advanced to second on a Strelioff infield single, then Jordan Bird delivered the game-winning hit to complete the 3-2 victory.  Chad Mukanik pitched all 13 innings to earn the win, while Steve Pura pitched into the 13th as well, before being relieved by Mike Henschel.  It's a good thing this one was played under the lights, because it didn't wrap up until almost 10:30..............a great performance by two outstanding teams who fought extremely hard............and a fitting way to wrap up the season.............
